Sarbjit Singh, a Farmer lives in a village near Punjab with his wife Sukhpreet, sister Dalbir Kaur, fatherand two young daughters. One day he gets arrested by the Pakistani army for crossing the border towards Pakistan unknowingly. Dubbed as an Indian spy, Sarbjit is tortured in the Pakistani jail to death. Alleged to be ‘Ranjit Singh Mattu’ in Pakistan, who is the main culprit behind the blasts in Pakistani City of Lahore, Sarbjit suffers for 23 years despite a spirited legal and political fight led by his sister Dalbir Kaur in Pakistan and India. Despite being proved innocent in the Pakistani Courts, Sarbjit is not released. Soon after, he is attacked in the jail and badly injured. He succumbs to his injuries finally. The film delineates the life and suffering of Sarbjit and his family in graphic detail.

Beginning his career as a Production Designer with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films ‘Black’ (2005) and ‘Saawariya’ (2007), Omung Kumar made his directorial debut with the 2014 biographical sports drama ‘Mary Kom’ based on the eponymous boxer.The film received several awards and nominations, including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. ‘Sarbjit’ is his second film.
