Arshinagar is an imaginary neighborhood terrorized by two rival gangs belonging to the Khans and the Mitras, both families in real estate business and sworn enemies. Both eye Arshinagar slum and plan to develop it into luxury apartments or shopping malls. They consult a corrupt politician called Deendayal who accepts bribes from both parties and promises both that he would have the slum evacuated. While Khan and Mitra goons engage in violent battles, Mitra's son Ronojoy and Khan's daughter Zulekha happen to meet and fall in love at first sight. Aware of the consequences, modern day Romeo and Juliet (named Ronojoy and Zulekha in the film) conduct their love affair in secret with the affair having its consequences for them.

Aparna Sen is a stalwart film director, screen-play writer and leading actress in Indian cinema. One of the most renowned and critically acclaimed director in Indian parallel cinema, Sen is known for her works like 36 Chowringee Lane (1981) , Paromitar Ekdin (2000), Sati (1989), Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002), 15 Park Avenue (2005), The Japanese Wife (2010), Iti Mrinalini (2010), Goyanar Baksho (2013), Arshinagar (2015) among others. She debuted with 36 Chowringee Lane which eventually won the "Best Director" , Best Cinematography" and "Best Feature Film in English Language" at National Awards 1982 . From there on she went on to direct critically success films like Paromitar Ekdin, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, 15 Park Avenue, The Japanese Wife, Iti Mrinalini, Goyanar Baksho. Mr. and Mrs. Iyer premiered at the Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland and was showcased at other prominent film festivals. Both Mr. and Mrs Iyer and 15 Park Avenue won multiple honors at National Awards. While Iti Mrinalini won her "Best Director" award at NYIFF in 2011.
